In the afternoon there will then be the traditional national Regatta at the Grand Harbour, organized by the National Regatta Association. The next day on Thursday 8 September, Victory Day, a commemorative ceremony by the President of Malta will take place at the Great Siege Monument in Valletta. The official celebrations for Victory Day continue on Wednesday morning – the eve of the national feast – with a pontifical Mass at the Collegiate Basilica Maria Bambina in Xagħra, Gozo. These developments show that the state of democracy in our country is strong, and how willing the Maltese are to take initiatives on an organizational or personal level to modernize their country.Īt the end of the evening, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, the Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil and the Parliamentary Speaker Anglu Farrugia were among those who laid wreaths at the foot of the Great Siege Monument.
